1. Who we are
Spark ("Spark", "we", "us") is an early-stage platform that helps verified university students in the UK and US find each other to start projects and startups. Spark is founded and operated by Krishan and Khaylan, students in the United Kingdom. For any privacy matter, you can reach us at hello@sparkyourstartups.com.
We are the "data controller" of the personal data described in this policy, which means we are responsible for how it is handled.
2. What we collect
At this early-access stage, the data we collect is limited. Depending on how you interact with us, this may include:
Information you give us
- Your email address, when you sign up for early access.
- Profile information (once the full product launches): your name, university, course, year of study, a short bio, skills, and a CV you choose to upload.
- Anything you post, such as projects, applications, messages, or forum posts.
Information collected automatically
- Basic technical data such as your browser type and general location, gathered by our hosting and any analytics we use, to keep the site working and secure.
3. How we use your data
We use your data only to run and improve Spark. Specifically, to:
- Add you to our early-access list and email you when Spark launches or with relevant updates;
- Create and operate your account and profile (at launch);
- Connect you with projects, collaborators and (where relevant) partners;
- Keep the platform safe, prevent abuse, and verify that members are genuine students;
- Understand how the product is used so we can improve it.
We will never sell your personal data.
4. Our lawful basis
Under UK data protection law, we rely on:
- Consent — for sending you early-access and marketing emails. You can withdraw this at any time by unsubscribing or emailing us.
- Performance of a contract — to provide the Spark service once you create an account and agree to our Terms.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the platform secure and to improve it, in a way that does not override your rights.
5. Who we share it with
We don't sell your data, and we share it only where needed to run Spark:
- Service providers who help us operate — for example our hosting, database and email providers. They process data only on our instructions.
- Other users, but only the parts you choose to make visible — for instance, your profile is visible to other verified students, and a project owner can see the details of someone who applies to their project.
- Authorities, if we are legally required to disclose information.
6. Storage & security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including access controls and encryption in transit. No online service can be completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to limit what we collect to what we actually need.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your data only as long as we need it. If you join the early-access list, we keep your email until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. If you create an account, we keep your data while your account is active and delete it within a reasonable period after you close it.
8. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the use of your personal data, to object to certain processing, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, email us at hello@sparkyourstartups.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
9. International users
Spark is run from the United Kingdom and is open to students in the UK and US. If you access Spark from outside the UK, your data may be transferred to and processed in the UK and other countries where our service providers operate. We take steps to ensure it remains protected wherever it is processed.
10. Cookies
Our site uses only essential cookies needed to function, and loads fonts from Google Fonts. If we add analytics or other non-essential cookies in future, we will ask for your consent first and update this policy.
